Proverbs 11:2 says, When pride comes then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. You're not kidding! But sometimes it sure can be hard to bite your tongue and show that humility. Especially when you know you are right.

Wisdom of biting your tongue.

I once worked with a woman who loved to garden. She had a large vegetable patch and was quite proud of her green thumb. Since I personally have never been able to plant something that actually grew out of the ground, I was very happy that she would share her harvest. Of course she never let it go that I was a black thumb and I humbly just dealt with her condescending comments.
One day I was talking to my coworkers about making zucchini bread. Well of course she offered some of her prize zuchini. In exchange for a loaf of bread. I agreed.

The next day she brought in a large bag of green zucchini. Or so she thought.

I didn't bother to look at the curious cruciferouses when I was at work, so when I got home I plopped that bag on the counter and started immediately to make my batter for the bread. When it was time to wash the green goodies I emptied the bag onto the counter. There they were . . . 1 small zucchini and 4 gigantic cucumbers! Well you can imagine my surprise. I actually stared a few minutes at those monstrous cukes and wondered if I was going crazy. Just because I didn't grow vegetables didn't mean that I didn't know at least what they looked like. First, I began to giggle. Then I really began to start laughing as I thought about the proud gardener who could not tell the difference between a cucumber and a zucchini.

Of course the next day, my coworker asked when I would be bringing in some zucchini bread for her and I really had to keep my face straight as I said, "Well do you like cucumber bread?"

She looked at me with a confused look as I quietly thanked her for that bag full of the largest cucumbers that I had ever seen. Oh the shock and awe and embarrassment on her face. She realized that she must have grabbed the cucumbers from the crisper drawer in the fridge that morning. It was dark. She was half asleep. You know, that could have been true!

It was clear that she was embarrassed and it took every ounce of restraint to not crack up right then and there. Boy did I have to bite my tongue! I think here about that proverb: When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom (Proverbs 11:2). You see the proud gardener was so humiliated at her mistake. But how much worse would it have been for her to add to her disgrace by making fun of her? And it certainly wouldn't have been wise for me to do that. After all that co worker. . . was my supervisor!
