I didn't venture out much this Christmas, but when I did, I was two for two with insults from kiddos.
On Christmas Eve, we went to our neighbor's house to deliver presents. We gave each of the family members a new blanket with a box of candy tucked in it. The 9 year old got Butterfinger and the 7 year old got M&Ms. Well, I had no idea, but the 7 year old's favorite candy in the whole wide world was Butterfinger. He was crushed that his older brother got the big box of his favorite candy. And of course, Big Bro would not trade or share. So the youngest turned red in the face and started crying quite intensely. His life was ruined because he didn't get his favorite candy. My bad!
Then on Christmas Day, we went to some aquaintenances' house for dinner. I took a shepherd's pie (roast beef in gravy on the bottom, then layers of peas, mashed potatoes and cheese). There was a lot of food - about 20 dishes to choose from - but one darling little 7 year old (what is it with this age child!) selected - or was dished out - a scoop of my shepherd's pie. I don't know who else got it because I was sitting at a small table. Just me, the hostess and the lucky little girl with my shepherd's pie. The hostess and I were chatting along when the little girl broke in, "I don't like this!", pointing to my shepherd's pie. There was nothing wrong with it - I'm eating it for dinner again tonight! - but the little girl apparently didn't like the peas that were in it, but she couldn't really specify that peas were what she didn't like, she just gave it the whole ensemble the summary judgement of "gross!"
Kids - gotta love em!
