A while back, I met the most interesting lady. She was a visitor to our midweek Bible study, and at fellowship time, she began to talk with a friend and me.
Her eyes lit up as if she had a wonderful secret to tell. She leaned forward to whisper, “Do you live on God time?”
My friend and I looked at one another as if we expected the other’s expression to make sense of the woman’s words. Then my friend shrugged and said, “I know we try.”
The lady smiled, full of delight, and her eyes twinkled when she said, “That’s why I’m here!”
I sensed a good story coming.
The lady told us that a few weeks before she’d realized she was tired of her to-do list. She’d decided God must have more for her life than accomplishing the same list of tasks over and over again. As she prayed about the matter (How wise she was to take it to God!), she asked God to give her a daily assignment and to help her recognize it for the gift it was. Then she promised to pay attention and obey.
How cool is that?!
“I didn’t mean to come here today,” she said. “I got lost. As I drove around, I found myself here. I saw the ladies going into the church and realized this was my assignment for today.” She sat up straight and smiled brightly, pleased with herself and with God.
I love that! I could never do that. Or maybe I could . . . and maybe I should.
I learned two lessons from my new friend that day:
1. God’s assignments trump the to-do list. Expect to get them; then obey.
2. When you get lost, go to church. (You might make a new friend!)
