“Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.” –Isaiah 46:9NIV
One of my fondest New Year’s memories comes from way back (well, maybe not so way back) in my early teen years. I was too young for the all night youth group events, yet old enough to babysit for married couples who wanted to go to late night New Year’s Eve parties without their kids. The kids’ bedtimes were always long before midnight, so I’d quietly watch TV or read until just before midnight. Then the house would be completely quiet—it was just me and God. I’d thank Him for all the good things I could remember about the outgoing year. When the New Year came, I’d listen happily to all the noise in the neighborhood. Then, as the world quieted down so that it was just me and God again, I’d confidently commit the New Year to Him.
New Year’s changed when I was old enough to attend the youth events, and I’ve never been alone on New Year’s since. I'm okay with that--I love being surrounded by family, friends, and/or festivity. Yet I still try to find some time at some point on New Year’s Eve to reflect prayerfully and gratefully on the outgoing year, then later on New Year’s Day to recommit the future, whatever it holds, to God. (Sometimes I do this on my birthday and birthday's eve, too.) For me it’s a simple, but meaningful way, to remember that, past, present, or future, life’s all wrapped up in Him.
Thank You, Lord, for the blessings and trials of 2009. Thank You for Your presence, sustenance, and care through it all. Thank You for good memories, tough lessons, spiritual growth, and our beautiful home. Most of all, thanks for leading us all through it all. Father, Teacher, Comforter, Messiah—I adore and worship You! Amen.
